PROJECT STORY

Welcome to Wurundjeri Country is an open-air exhibition inviting commuters to pause and connect with Country on their journey. Featuring the work of five Wurundjeri artists, this exhibition transforms Collins Street tram shelters into vibrant canvases that celebrate the Wurundjeri people's rich cultural heritage and enduring stories.

Our journey unfolds across each stop, encouraging reflection on the connection between Country, Culture, and Community. At Southern Cross, Coree Thorpe's Protection offers protection and strength for the journey ahead. At William Street, Simone Thomson's Darrung Marrup, Spirit Tree walks us through two worlds, navigating between the Dreamtime and the modern world. At Elizabeth Street, Ash Firebrace honours Bunjil the creator spirit who shaped the land and the Wurundjeri people with his piece Watching Over Me. At Town Hall, Alex Kerr's piece Wurundjeri Country celebrates the profound connection to Country, recognising ancestors, significant meeting places, and themes of healing and unity. At 101 Collins Street, Samantha Richards' artwork New Destinations reflects on the relationships and pathways that shape our identities throughout life's journeys. Finally, at Spring Street stands Coree Thorpe's Warrior, symbolising the strength, pride and heritage of the Wurundjeri people.

These artworks are a powerful testament to the Wurundjeri people's enduring presence, memories and wisdom. They invite us to reflect on the significance of the land beneath our feet and recognise that every step we take is part of a larger ongoing narrative - one that honours the traditional custodians of this land and the generations who have walked before us.
