I think our culture is important, not just for us as mob, but for us, you know, to be able to live in this country as one, it’s very important to learn our culture. And because there’s so many beautiful things that you can learn from that culture, and you don’t have to learn everything in a day. But if you take that time and actually have a yarn with a Wurundjeri person or whatever it is, you know that they’ll always be there, we will always be there to help anyone out.

I paint because of my Elders and the people before me, and I put little spirits everywhere. It’s the representation of our ancestors and, you know, paying homage to them. And, you know, so every opportunity I get, I get to put them in there. You know, the more people learn about that part of our culture, the closer it’s going to bring this country together, and that’s why I do what I do.

Alex Kerr is a proud Wurundjeri person. For the Yarra Trams project Alex created the Wurundjeri Country artwork.
