Protection

MEET THE ARTIST
What shields mean for mob, obviously it's protection, protecting the cultural process and protecting art, and so if you wanted it to be multilayered and how you can look at that, what that looks like as well.
So, this piece is important around all of those things, around what we're trying to protect, what we're trying to hold, what we're trying to restore.
At the time, it was about just a shield. Now, I see it, and I'm like, oh, it actually means more when I think about why. You know, sometimes you do things subconsciously and you don't even realise it.
And that's the purpose of, you know, being able to flood the city with more and more cultural content, it's about how do we, you know, reconnect with ourselves but connect with other cultures, other people in a society that would love to talk, but don't know where to go. It opens them doors.
Coree Thorpe identifies as a Wurundjeri, Yorta Yorta, Gunai Kurnai, Gunditjmara and Wemba Wemba person. The artwork being presented is called Protection.
